Our Valentine's Lobster Appreciation Party was a success!
In February, it is our annual tradition to show our families our love and appreciation by providing them with a special Valentine’s Day experience. In previous years, this has included a night out on us, to include dinner reservations and child care. But given these COVID times, we decided to get creative with our special Valentine treat! It was important that we make some needed changes to our annual tradition and keep our Ohanas safe!
The Island Living Homes team flew in LIVE lobsters - pulled fresh from the icy waters off the rockbound coast of Maine - and had them ready for our clients to pick up and cook at home for their Valentine Dinner. We even paired them with our finest ILH House Wine! This Valentine’s Day treat is a token of our appreciation for their business and referrals, and it was the perfect stay-at-home dinning experience.
As soon as the invites were sent out the families, the reservations were coming in hot! We had over 100 lobsters to pick up at Honolulu International Airport. These lobsters were in for some airline mileage! Our clients could create any experience they desired, from a romantic dinner for two, to inclusion of the family of 6, or even for some, to a “Galentine’s" Ladies Night IN! Even our own ILH team got in on the fun with their own families. Valentine's Day 2021 was packed with a delightful meal, new experiences and belly laughs to go around.
Now with summer around the corner, we want to share with you how to create this experience of preparing your own LIVE Lobster Feast so that you can partake with us!

Lobsters From Maine provides a list of companies that can ship live lobsters. Our lobsters came live in a box filled with ice packs. Once you have lobsters in hand, simply keep a damp towel over them, store them in the refrigerator, and cook them within 24-48 hours. And whatever you do, do not store them in water or cover them in ice.
LOBSTER BOIL
Ingredients:
- 3 whole live lobsters
- 2 pounds of clams
- 3 links of smoked kielbasa sausages
- 5 ears of corn, shucked and halved
- 1 large onion
- 1 head of garlic
Directions:
- Fill a large stock pot with water. The pot should be large enough to fit the lobsters with plenty of room.
- Bring to a boil and salt the water. Quarter the onion and cut the head of garlic through the widest part of the head. Add to the boiling water
- Before boiling the lobsters, snip the rubber bands off the claws. Add lobsters to the boiling water.
- Cook lobsters according to weight
- Divide the clams in half and tie up each half loosely with cheese cloth. Make sure there is room for the clams to open.
- 7 minutes before the lobsters are done cooking, add the clams
- 3 minutes before lobsters are done cooking, add the corn.
- Remove lobsters and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Strain the boil and arrange on a platter.
- Serve with lemon wedges and melted butter
